Fran and I have been working on recording for the past two or three years and we've been writing original songs and also reworking cover tunes that we both love. “Song to the Siren” is one of our favorites. It's a Tim Buckley song from the 1970's that I learned by listening to This Mortal Coil. Their version is very different than the one we've come up with! Have a listen and then go find This Mortal Coil's version. You won't even recognize it!

On that note, I bid you a lovely beginning of summer,

Jessica Star
Jessica Startag:www.jessicastar.com,2005:Post/70790952022-10-11T11:12:53-04:002023-06-21T15:54:46-04:00the DIGITAL RELEASE of 'Rising From The Vault' October 16th, 2022!
Greetings,

I hope this email finds you well!

I know it’s been a long time since I’ve sent out a message from my website. Sorry for the delay.

I’m excited to announce the digital release of my first album, “Rising from the Vault”. I recorded this album in 1995 at Fantasy Studios in Berkley, CA with the late Bob Matthews, producer and ‘recordist’ of The Grateful Dead (Working Man’s Dead, Aoxomoxoa) and the late John Kahn, Bammie nominated arranger and bassist of the Jerry Garcia Band.

I was twenty-five years old, gigging heavily in the Bay Area, Ca. and through some very fun connections, got to know the late Rock Scully ( longtime manager of The Dead). Rock introduced me to Bob and the project started to take shape. Jerry Garcia had died the year before we made this album and I think that sparked the creative juices. I brought in ten of my best original songs and we pulled in some fantastic Bay Area rock musicians. The players on this album include Pete Sears on keys (Hot Tuna, Moon Alice, Jefferson Starship), Mario Cippolina on bass ( Huey Lewis and The News), Donny Baldwin on drums (Jefferson Starship, Lydia Penske and Cold Blood), Ho Young on guitar ( The John Kahn Band), as well as a Dixieland horn section and string and wind ensemble.

Shortly after we finished recording the album, I got a call from Bob and he told me to sit down. He then let me know that John Kahn had passed away. He told me that they were in the studio together listening to the final mix for the first time and after it was finished, John said to Bob, that he used everything he’d ever learned as an arranger on this album and he could die happily now. John Kahn died the next week. He died one year after Jerry Garcia, joining him for some fantastic music, I’m certain. This album was played at John Kahn’s wake, as it was his last work.

You may notice that three of the song on this album are also on my album ‘Dragon’s Lair’ which was my first release back in 1999.

Years and people have passed but I feel this album is timeless and deserves to be heard and shared. The musicianship is gorgeous and needs to be enjoyed.

The digital release is scheduled for October 16th, 2022. You can stream it on Spotify and buy a physical copy from my website.

I was all set to launch my Janis tribute band “ Rockin’ Joplin”, last year after our sold-out show at The Turning Point on Miss Joplin’s birthday and then… Global pandemic. Who could have foreseen that one? So- with live shows shut down and making music in person with each other coming to a halt- I focused on hair- (yes, I’m a blossoming hairdresser by day) and on songwriting and recording.

I’m feeling the winds of inspiration and the desire to share my music again.
Hi everyone! My gigantic apologies for the lapse in checking in here! An independent musician has got to make her way in the world and I do that by my other love, hair! Today I got gussied up at the salon where I work as a New Talent Stylist, at Eclipse Aveda Concept salon in Tarrytown, NY! I went from dark purplish black to blond!!! It took about five weeks or so of removing color, waiting, removing more color and then today we went full tilt boogie and morphed me into a pearly blond! I promise I’ll have something musical to report soon! My life is an ever unfolding flower?

be well!

Yikes! I have been working at Eclipse Aveda Salon as an assistant and learning the ropes of being a professional stylist!
I had a small show at a coffee house in Tarrytown, NY last month - 2 hours of me solo! That was fun!
Basically rocking my life.
I'm super excited about tonight and playing music up there.
Ok, rock on y'all!Jessica Startag:www.jessicastar.com,2005:Post/43461842016-08-28T22:30:31-04:002017-01-15T19:53:08-05:00Almost the end of summerSo much has unfolded in my life! I've graduated from Cosmotology school and have started working at Eclipse- an Aveda Concept salon- in Tarrytown, NY! It turns out there are a lot of stylists that are also musicians so I'm in good company❤️. I really love this new world that I've found. I had no idea I was going to be a stylist and I'm thrilled about it! That is the wondrous thing about life; If you don't like the road you're walking down, like Dolly Parton says, you gotta walk down a different road ( or something like that). Another very cool thing about working a job is that for me, I've always found inspiration while working; Rainy Day ( off of Solo) was written while I was waitressing in Fairfax, CA on an extremely rainy day. Grateful Day (Solo) was written as I was driving to another waitressing job in Marin County, CA- I passed a park that used to be where the Grateful Dead Family stayed, in I think, the early 70's.. It also used to be the home of Native Americans ( much earlier). Let's see, Cupid's Arrow was written at a coffee shop in the early morning hours in San Rafael, CA while I was fueling up to go be the Muffin Girl ( another story)... So, as I was working in the salon today ( my first full weekend) I was feeling musical inspiration coming through and also, the music playing in the salon is pretty good so that helps too.
Last weekend I went to the NY Rennaissance Festival with my son and our friends! It was very fun!
Oh,, and my hair is jewel tones of jade and deep bluish purple mixed with dark brown- kind of like an oil spill!

We just got home from two days of shows at the Steampunk World's Fair and let me tell you, it was a GREAT TIME!!! I am so happy with the whole weekend. What a great event. So many creative people all in one place. I just love festivals and events like these. We met alot of really cool people and we got to PLAY!!! My new guitar sounds soooo good! I love her. She purrs... She roars.. She chimes.. I just love her. My band is badass. We played on the main stage outdoors, The Midway Stage... So, Saturday during our set, we were rocking on Wesa and I was just digging in and totally loving my distortion on my guitar and the storm started in!!! After our song, which was only about halfway through our set, they had to have everyone vacate the outside due to impending weather!!! So, then we played today and the sun came out and it got warmer as we went.. We played everything and had a really beautiful crowd of steampunkers and we even got to do The River at the end as an extra! What a great time. Thank you Jeff Mach and Genevieve!!! We love your events. The staff, Circuit 6 sound and light crew, all the volunteers, all the bands totally rock. The thing that makes relaxing days the sweetest is when you are very busy creating your living dream and then you take the time to relax, rest, slow down, enjoy the natural pace of nature and your own body...
I've been extremely busy lately with creating my life, recreating my life, sculpting my world to fit me better... I've always found it very uncomfortable to live in other people's ideas of "reality". What makes one person's idea of real more real that someone else's? Money? A larger group of people agreeing on it? Hmmmm.... Someone told me a long time ago that I live in my own little world... We all do. Have you ever noticed that people can be laughing together at the same time but they are laughing at different things? Or having a conversation but they are actually talking about two different subjects? People live in their own little worlds. You perceive their world through your own ability to see. The clearer you are, the clearer you can see reality. I love creating my own little world. Is it little? Is it vast? Only you know the flower that you are becoming. It is up to you to grow that flower and manifest it to the eyes of the world... To present it... If it never blooms, no one will have known that it could have existed.... Your gift is manifesting that beautiful being that you are and bringing yourself out for the world to experience... Most likely the biggest naysayer will be the voice of fear inside your head... Walk through the fear.. The veil of fear is an illusion and once you gain the confidence and strength to walk through it, you will be stronger..Jessica Startag:www.jessicastar.com,2005:Post/40514832016-02-20T09:43:34-05:002017-01-15T19:53:08-05:00Morning of 2nd day at Wicked Faire!Good morning everyone!
This is the last Wicked Faire ever and we played last night on the Regency Stage! Our producer from Mystical Creature, Winter, brought the archived DAT tape to digital form and mastered it and my friend, Wheeler Stone did the beautiful graphic art.
I am so happy with the way it came out!!! Thank you UNIVERSE!!!!!
This album was recorded one year after Jerry Garcia left the Earth. I was hanging out in Marin County and with alot of help, this album was made combining the forces of my original songs and vocals, Pete Sears on the keyboard and piano(Moon Alice, Hot Tuna, Jefferson Starship), Mario Cipollina on the bass (Huey Lewis and The News), Donny Baldwin on the drums (Jefferson Starship, Lydia Pense and Cold Blood), Ho Young on guitar (John Kahn Band), John Kahn arranging (Jerry Garcia's bassist in the Jerry Garcia Band), and Bob Matthews producing (producer of the Grateful Dead)...
It's a beautiful album. It was my first experience in a real recording studio- Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, California! You may wonder why it took so long to manifest in the world? It's a good question. I think it's actually perfect. I always wanted to have a "from the vault" kind of album and whalah! Yes, believe me, I plan on recording all new songs as soon as possible but sometimes it's nice to listen to what came before.. The beginnings.. I hope you will order yourself a copy of this album. I'm tired but feeling really good about the weekend. We had a really fun show on Saturday and so many beautiful and CREATIVE revelers showed up!!! I got a video of the entire show and in between each song they are clapping, hooting, reveling!!! Wow, I love those people. The Good and Bad Faeries Balls were AWESOME!!! We got to hear a little of the Sunday night acoustic concert and it sounded so sweet.
Alright, that is all for now. Good night!

JessicaJessica Startag:www.jessicastar.com,2005:Post/39135542015-11-04T14:46:44-05:002015-11-04T14:46:44-05:00preparing for FaerieCon East! This is the very busy time before a big weekend festival or, convention as is this weekend. I'm very excited. I wasn't able to be at FaerieCon East last year. At the last minute, actually this week last year, my plans were drastically altered and I had to cancel which I abhor! One year later I make my way back into The Realm with my trio to play on Saturday, November 7th at 1pm on the Mythic Stage! We also have our merchandise booth so, come say hi! I'm so excited to be my authentic self... I do well in fantasy situations. I love it when people are creative and expressing themselves freely. Besides being excited about our show, I'm really looking forward to the Good and Bad Faeries Balls on Friday and Saturday night! Besides being excited about the events, I'm REALLY LOOKING FORWARD to seeing everyone. Not sure if you know this about me but I am a tribal minded person. I consider that I come from a tribe. My main tribe is on the west coast. They are spread out from LA to northern Washington state. I've known some of them for over 20 years. I've been here in NY for 13 years and now, I have a tribe here on the east coast. This was my plan. To have tribes on both coasts and be part of the interconnectedness of all those like minded people. It's not surprising that many of them know each other from various gatherings. I have had a very intense year since last FaerieWorlds 2014. I look forward to being among my people again. I drink in the harmonic energy of my fellow dreamers!!!

Jessica StarJessica Startag:www.jessicastar.com,2005:Post/39063602015-10-31T00:48:51-04:002015-10-31T00:50:10-04:00FaerieCon East!!!Hey beautiful ones;)
I'm so excited, FaerieCon East is next week and we are playing on Saturday, November 7th at 1pm on the Mythic Stage!
I love FaerieCon and FaerieWorlds... I had gone through my cycle of gigging relentlessly with my touring band, had recorded "Rising" in 1995 which was never released (until this year), and had recorded and released "Dragon's Lair" in 1999 on my newly formed label, RA Records.
A few years later, with more new songs in my repertoire, my friend and fellow musician, Alan Watt, said to me," we need to get all those new songs down on a recording." We recorded this at his house and it's just me, my guitar and voice, all those then new songs, and some didgereedoo and light percussion.
After this cd was duplicated, I began traveling the southwest of America, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada and all over California and then I moved to NYC to keep living my dream.
I think of this as a songwriter's cd.
Here you will find the original version of "The Ocean".
I hope you'll order it and enjoy!

all my very best to you,

Jessica Star
Jessica Startag:www.jessicastar.com,2005:Post/37307622015-06-05T14:54:24-04:002015-06-05T14:59:38-04:00musingsGood day!
Here is the link to my newest release and first recorded album,"RISING; From the Vault"!
Please take the time to listen and download it! With each description, I went back in time in my mind to when I wrote the song and it brought back alot of memories of the people and the situations that were happening at the time. Those were good times! When you're living through those moments, it seems like life will always be that way but as we all figure out, the only constant in life is change. I love that I'm releasing this very first album of mine at this point in my life. It's very good to remember what came before. This album was recorded twenty years ago! Doesn't that seem like a long time? I know, it's kind of mind boggling but it seems like not that long ago really. I've had an entire life time in between. It's all my original songs and was recorded at Fantasy Studios in Berkely, CA.
Other news?
We are gearing up for spring and summer shows! The Festival of Legends is up next in late April in North Carolina and it will be our debut performance there. It was the year we made Mystical Creature, played a bunch of Faerie Festivals as well as other venues and at the end of August, I made some very serious changes. I am currently in one of the most intense times of my life but what makes a diamond? A lot of things right? Pressure is the thing I'm talking about. Under pressure we make decisions that show ourselves and other what we are made of. I choose to stick to the truth. When you tell the truth, you only have to remember the truth. Truth is the sharpest blade.
I am so grateful to all of my friends and fans who have helped me at this time! Because of you, my son and I had a really good holiday and I was able to buy him some presents! For any of you who actually know me, you know that I don't stay down too long. I gather depth and refine myself and then rise in a new and more appropriate form. I liken this phase to that of a Phoenix. I believe in listening to your heart. Your heart is your guide and will always guide you in the truest direction. That doesn't mean the easiest path at all! I do believe that if you follow your heart you will end up in the most perfect place. I believe!!!!!
Mystical Creature and all of my merchandise is a great gift all year around! I could really use the help too;)
Also, WE ARE PLAYING WICKED FAIRE!!!
http://wickedfaire.com

Bright blessings to you, the reader;)

Jessica StarJessica Startag:www.jessicastar.com,2005:Post/34257052014-12-22T01:18:37-05:002014-12-22T01:18:37-05:00Happy Holidays!!!I am giving a big, humongous THANK YOU to all of you who have helped me through this rocky path I've been on! This weekend was EPIC. I left Friday morning and met up with my bassist, Joseph, at Spoutwood Farm. We drove up to Syracuse, NY and played the next day at the Central NY Pagan Pride Project at 11am and 3pm. We heard John Harford and his band Ashangal! We heard Tim Parker and his son play in their duo, Arethusa--- AWESOME. We witnessed the sounds of Project Wendigo!!! We met so many beautiful people. We saw the amazing belly dance troup, Adi Shakti World Fusion Bellydance
Then we packed it up and drove back down to Glen Rock, PA to play on Sunday at noon and 3pm at Spoutwood Farm for the Mother Earth Harvest Fair! Those folks at Spoutwood are so good at putting on well run events. I'll say the same for John Harford who was the entertainment coordinator for the Pagan Pride Project. I love working with people that make it easier!!!
We had such beautiful dancers dancing to our music at Spoutwood!!! The colors of their fans and scarves was just glorious. So many nice people. We loved every second of this weekend...
Then we drove home; me back up to NY and Joseph to his home in Maryland. I brought just my guitars and suitcase in last night. Today I will unload the rest and REST!!!!

thank you!Jessica Startag:www.jessicastar.com,2005:Post/31943782014-09-19T08:09:01-04:002014-09-19T08:09:01-04:00Shows!!!Today I leave with the truck packed for our shows!!! We got to the Maryland Faerie Festival on Friday night at almost midnight. On Saturday we were scheduled to play at 3pm, right after Frenchy and the Punk on the main stage. As they were finishing their set, a huge rain storm came in and our set was rained out! It happens! Last year we played as the storm came in and Telesma got their set rained out, now I know how that feels. It's a very weird feeling. At first I was ok with it because, what can you do? It rained hard! But as 3pm hit and we were sitting in the cabin all dressed and prepared to rock a set, I felt disappointment and kind of sad. We just have so much fun playing. We missed that fun! But the cool thing that happened is that we got to chill and hang out with these amazing people that we see at the festivals but are usually too busy to really talk with for any length of time. The rain made everything slow way down. It was kind of neat. Wotan and Waura, the Faery Smashers were there all the way from Seattle and we got to spend time with them:) Scott and Samantha of Frenchy and the Punk were there and they were great as usual.
Today we had a noon show on the main stage and it went very well and was fun. The weather was good! Afterwards we sold CDs and tank tops! We also walked the merchants road and wished happy Mother's Day to all the moms, including me!
Now we're driving back home to New York.
Thank you Faeries!
January has been,” make an album” month!!!! I want to do this every January! I’m sitting here in my studio which strangely and magically is the only room in our home where the heat is working… And I’m listening to new mixes as Winter rolls them off the press, fresh and hot!
Thirteen songs:)

Jessica Startag:www.jessicastar.com,2005:Post/28987182014-01-24T17:35:33-05:002014-04-25T12:28:48-04:00Last night in California

What a tornado!!! This is my fourteenth day in Northern California for the making of my new album!!! I fly home to New York tomorrow… Whew! This has been so amazing. We recorded 13 songs in 11 days. Joseph, my bassist (for anyone who doesn’t know that already) was out here with me for the first week and then I stayed to keep recording and help with editing and mixing. Now Winter will work his producer magic and start sending me mixes. I am so grateful to have been able to record this album. My husband, Ben, is a real rockstar. He told me eleven years ago that we’d make this happen and we did! I love it when a good plan comes together!

Jessica Startag:www.jessicastar.com,2005:Post/28987192014-01-14T17:17:09-05:002014-04-25T12:28:48-04:00Third day of recording!!!

We’ve done basic tracks for eleven out of thirteen songs in three days!!!! Wow!!! And not only does it sound amazing; it’s really fun! Winter is hilarious.

Jessica Startag:www.jessicastar.com,2005:Post/28987202014-01-09T20:51:10-05:002017-01-15T19:53:03-05:00Joseph and I fly to Oakland, California this Saturday to spend two weeks recording with Winter!!!!!

I was born in Oakland and I think it’s really interesting that I recorded my first album in Berkley( next door to Oakland) back in 1995 at Fantasy Studios and now, 19 years later(!!!) I’m returning to record my fourth album with Winter Sichelschmidt at El Mundo Bueno Studios!
Yep, I released “Solo”, my third album, in 2002. That same year I moved to NYC and began my metamorphosis into what I am now, a New Yorker. It happened. I really am a New Yorker! I am so friggin busy and focused.
Another focus that has been really intense is that I just became a Zumba instructor and last night I taught the entire Zumba class by myself! I have a ballet, modern and jazz background and haven’t really danced since 1993 when I switched over to being a musician. I went to a Zumba class at our gym about a year ago and fell in love! It’s so fun!
My favorite Zumba teacher has to take a break to heal some injuries and I just felt like I needed to step up. I got certified as a Zumba instructor and I’ve been learning about two to three routines a week along with focusing on my new album. So, I’m taking over her class while she heals and I am having a great time with it. Yes, very busy but all amazing creations. I’ll be gone from my new class for the next two weeks while I make my new album and then I’ll be back and we will be getting hot and sweaty! Yeah, I said it!
My husband and I have been working diligently on forging this reality for eleven years. We got married, had our son Joshua and recently bought an amazing house. Oh, and we JUST got the cutest dog!
So, I have been writing these songs I’ll be recording and shaping myself and my music and now it’s time to make my new record. We have thirteen songs! I feel this will be my best album so far for many reasons. One reason is that I’m working with a bunch of my fellow musicians who tour and play the same festivals that I’ve been playing for the past two years. Finding these kindred spirits has been amazing. I left my whole tribe out in Northern California in 2002 to live my dream. I missed everyone for years (eleven and counting)!!!!!! It took me a very long time to find more kindred spirits. I had to keep following the truest feelings in my heart and inner guidance and whalah! I found the Faery Festivals!
Tomorrow, my last day home before my two week epic studio journey, will be very busy getting ready and preparing. As a mom of both my little boy and three cats and a new dog, I have a lot of Beings depending on me. My absence is felt very deeply. My husband and family understand my dreams and my need to fulfill them. They support me in every way.
I love my life. I am so honored to be able to live and experience the reality I’m in.
I still miss my west coast people so much and hopefully I’ll be able to see some of them while I’m out there although two weeks is a very short time to record an entire album. I feel that my life is coming full circle. (Exhale)....

Thank you God!

We are gearing up to record my fourth cd this January.

This weekend was so much fun!
Joseph came up and stayed over and we played music for about 14 hours over Saturday and Sunday! We are so excited for this weekend coming up and FaerieCon East! Brett Alexander Zwerdling will be playing percussion with us and there’s a rumor that Damion will will be gracing us with her amazing dancing!
I’ve been listening to Woodland’s new cd and I just love it. It sounds like the music you’d hear if you happened upon a faerie gathering at night in an open field under a starry sky.
Our show is this Friday, Nov. 8th at 3:30 on the Mythic Stage (upstairs)... We have a vending table so come visit us! We have a bunch of new merchandise!!!

I just had such a friggin amazing weekend! I drove down to Maryland on Friday and rehearsed with my bassist, Joseph Blackfeather, and then we played at The New Deal Cafe on Saturday night with Brett Alexander Zwerdling as a guest drummer. We had a great time playing. Joseph built a stage set with scaffolding and beautiful curtains. It looked really nice and was the perfect accent for our show. Thank you to all of you who came to hear us play! We hope to play there again soon.
Sunday we went to the Maryland Renn Faire and Joseph introduced me as his singer. I loved it! I’m usually the one doing the introductions of “my drummer, my bassist”. It was great to be his singer. The Maryland Renn Faire is HUGE! We ran into Cu Dubh a few times and saw a bunch of friends including Alan and Deb O’Connor.
What a fantastic day.
Then, today I drove up to my friend, Cynthia’s house and we went to check out Bube’s Brewery to see where I wanted to play. It is soooo cool and magical!
We are going to have my cd release party there on Saturday, March 29th in the ballroom!
Cynthia is also working on her new cd. Her band is Sofeya and the Puffins!
I’m so grateful. I have met and am supported and surrounded by amazing people.

It’s the NY Faerie Festival Fall Fun(d)raiser!!! Three days of fun and music!
Other news? My little family and I moved out of our house of three years on August 31st and we are waiting for our house to close (buying a house!). So we are living in a hotel with our cats! We have a little mini fridge but no kitchen. We’ve been eating in restaurants a lot. I usually cook almost everything we eat and I’m pretty militant about my food. It’s challenging, eating healthy when you’re eating out.
I think of it as being on tour or at least preparation for touring.
We call this a ‘staycation’...
We have also been having a great time going to the NY Renn Faire on the weekends. It’s just so pleasant, especially with our little boy!
By myself for the first time in a while and feeling the vibrations of three shows we played over the weekend.
Now I’m here in New York still resting a bit from the cross country plane trip. My thoughts are on training. As my normal mode; training, preparing, making ready for the next festival, recording, show, song…
And now I have two more shipmates (other than myself).
I’ve always had shipmates but I’ve tended to think in terms of being a solo act, thus my last cd,“Solo”.
Ken Om Crampton and Joseph Blackfeather are my running buddies and I really look forward to the next time we play!

Whew! I rehearsed today a normal amount of time and all systems check out! The other day I learned how to take auto tune off of my vocal effects box. It’s great if you sing out of tune I guess but what was happening is that I’ve been playing outdoor festivals and sometimes the wind comes through my mic and the effect I had on my voice would suddenly bend the note flat or sharp and it wasn’t pretty… So, I turned it off and now I can still use the cool effect! Currently watching Catdog with my four and a half year old. It’s sweltering outside. My garden is thriving!

As you can guess, the nervous excitement has begun. I’m getting over a nasty cold! The past two weeks have been full of illness and strain! All par for the course I suppose.
Anyway, so much to do and much rehearsal before I embark on my first coast and my homeland. I’ll be camping and I am so looking forward to being under the stars and around fire dancing! My friend and drummer, Ken Om Crampton will be there with me!
Saturday morning we got up early and made it to the festival with plenty of time for me and the band, Ken Om Crampton on drums and Joseph Blackfeather on bass, to set up and sound check before we started playing. Our set was hot and full of vigor! It was so fun although we didn’t get any video of Saturday’s shows. Our next set was a half hour later on the Market stage so we boogied down the road and set up and sound checked again and then played. It was an awesome set which crescendoed into Cu Dubh ending their drum and bagpipe song as they led a procession for The Queen, right before they walked in front of our stage. We were playing The River and were in the instrumental part as the Queen walked by… Awesomeness! Then as the procession departed, I went into the last verse. So much fun!
I’ve added a shot of the band in the barn. Ken is on the left ( no hair), Joseph is on the right ( braids).
After our show we just happily walked around and enjoyed the festival.

The forecast for the NY Faerie Festival area was rain all weekend but I thought,” how often are they really right?” So I meticulously packed all of our camp gear, food, suitcases, etc.. My husband said we should get a hotel and forget about camping. He went to college in Binghamton and he knows that if it’s going to rain anywhere, it would be there. I said,“I want to camp!”
Well, we should have just left our camp gear at home! As we were heading up, it started raining, we got a tarp and he wrapped the bedding, which was on the roof, in the tarp. We were getting texts from my band and camp mates about monsoon rains and then about how they closed the road to the campground- no in or out. Sigh… We booked a hotel. We brought all our pertinent stuff inside and as I took a hot bath and fell asleep in a clean white bed, felt super guilty that my band and friends were now stuck in the rainy, muddy campground and were sleeping in their cars ( drummer found the barn).
Friday; we got to the festival right before my first show, opening the festival and my band was already on stage and ready to play!
I wore black galoshes. It was not raining but extremely muddy and really hot and muggy. This was my band’s first time actually playing together. They sounded good!
We spent the rest of Friday meeting up with other friends and trying to gage whether we could camp. I really wanted to camp! I wanted to have the tribal community feeling. Hotels don’t really give you that.
So, Friday evening a big storm came in and we sequestered ourselves in Billy Bardo’s Tudor house and were entertained by an impromptu concert by The Bardo Brothers! (I’ve added a picture of the Bardo Brothers)

One year ago this weekend, I saw a picture of myself at the NYFF and I didn’t look the way I thought I did. I was chunky and 23 pounds heavier than I am now. I decided right then to lose weight and be disciplined with my food and also find the right work out. I hardly ever eat in restaurants anymore. I eat the highest quality organic and non- GMO food available. I found Body Pump (lifting weights to music) and Zumba! I go to those classes as often as I can. One year later I embark on the NYFF and the place that kicked off my year long life style change!
Also, I am playing with my band this year! Ken Om Crampton on drums and Joseph Blackfeather on bass!
I went with my husband and son and played twice on Friday, Saturday and Sunday for a total of six shows. My friend, Ken Om Crampton http://www.eyeclopes.com/oracle/
accompanied me on his eclectic drums. It was so fun. So many people come to that one. We played Friday and one of the staff said,” you think that was fun? Wait til tomorrow, that’s when everyone gets here.” My big lesson for that trip was to respect the power of Red Bull and even though it helps you drive home at night, it really takes a toll. Nah, it wasn’t six shows in three days;) It was the Red Bull! Anyway, it was a great time and I loved it.
The next weekend, Mother’s Day weekend, I played at The Maryland Fairy Festival.
http://www.marylandfaeriefestival.org/
Ken and I played five shows in two days. One of which was a two hour set down by the stream… Alan and Deb O’Connor renewed their Handfasting vows and asked us to play for them during the ceremony and it couldn’t have been more synchronistic. We finished our 90 minute set and as I was retuning, Deb cascaded through the meadow on a white unicorn ( with pastel rainbow hair- the unicorn that is) and we launched into Everlasting Life. Then we played Cupid’s Arrow as they were reciting their vows to each other in front of a big crowd of costumed friends.
We shared the Stage with Frenchy and The Punk
http://www.frenchyandthepunk.com/
and Telesma http://telesmaband.com/
on Sunday which was great.
I really enjoyed the event. My only regret was not having enough time in between all my shows to really check out the vendors but my husband and son brought me back a coveted pair of wire wrap elf ears right before my last show on Sunday on the Main Stage. I also got an amazing black leather vest from The Leather Lair.
http://www.theleatherlair.com
It’s so beautiful!
I met so many cool new friends.
Last weekend I went with my husband and son to The Steampunk World’s Fair.
http://steampunkworldsfair.com
So now I set my sights on The New York Fairy Festival at the end of June
http://www.nyfaeriefest.com/
and then, FaerieWorlds in Eugene, Oregon at the end of July!
http://faerieworlds.com/
People ask me where I play and I say,” Fairy Festivals” and smile…

The Tribes of Spoutwood

In the time before time, people lived in family groups and friendship groups, supporting each other in times of struggle, rejoicing in times of celebration. They sought a balance between work, rest, and play, and they watched as the balance between day and night changed through the year. Because their lives were closely tied to the land and to the time of year, they celebrated each season in turn. And because they watched the sun rise in the east and set in the west, they noticed also the importance of the four directions to planting. Thus, a custom evolved of celebrating the coming of summer, with four tribes representing the four directions and the four seasons, each bringing a special gift. A King and Queen of the May were chosen each year, and all the tribes came to make merry, dance around the maypole, and sing.

This, then, is our mythic custom, and Spoutwood Farm has four tribes. Guests are invited to “join” a tribe and march with it to the daily midday ceremonies. There are no requirements, paperwork, or dues. Simply find the tribe that “fits” what your heart tells you and join in the celebration!
“Unite and unite and let us all unite, for summer is a-coming today, and whither we are going, we all shall unite, in the merry morning of May.”
These words echo on the winds in Britain at this time of the year, as people gather to sing in the May. Here in Glen Rock, we add our voices, and take joy in stepping into the light half of the year. The May festival is often thought of as the coming of spring, but as we see in this song, in earlier days it was the coming of Summer. In some communities, a May King and Queen were chosen. This ‘union’ may have been symbolic of the ancient marriage of the high king to the land. It was believed, some say, that when the leader lived in a right relationship with the land, all would prosper. Here at Spoutwood, we gather to celebrate this ancient rite, and our four mythic tribes come together to witness the oath of the Royal Court. If this is your first visit to the Fairie Festival, make plans to join the colorful throng as the tribes wend their way to the Royal Stage by the Maypole, carrying the ancient treasures of their peoples.
The River Tribe’s totem is the Salmon of Wisdom. Like the Danube in the heartland of the ancient Celts, or our own mighty Susquehanna, this mob of revelers threatens to overflow the riverbanks, for they represent the West and they carry with them the Cauldron of Youthfulness and Regeneration. This is the place of love, of community and prosperity. Their leader will recite an oath on Sunday upholding the virtues of the West. We the people can look to our own lives and ask: “How are we showing love to our communities? How are we fostering prosperity for all beings in our lives?”

The Mountain tribe marches vigorously into the assembly, with voices echoing on the winds of truth. Symbolized by a swift hawk, they carry with them the Stone of Destiny, the wisdom of the North. Their leader swears an oath to continue the arduous climb of self-development through life. Life on a mountain is beautiful and exquisite, but it is also a climb requiring strength and courage. All of us experience the struggle to start each leg of our ascent, going higher and reaching deeper within for strength. Are we willing to face the struggle against physical and spiritual gravity with courage and authenticity, and to speak truthfully of our ordeals?

The Meadow tribe sweetly skips into the court, bearing a banner with their totemic stag. Their number is small, yet they are no less impressive, for their song is rich. They bear the Flute of Inspiration, and their leader will swear an oath upholding the virtues of the East. This is the place of expression, of music, song, poetry, dance, laughter, and story. The meadow tribe reminds us of the stories of all our people, and unfolds them into a collective weave. Here in the East, we are challenged to live an inspired life: to dance, to tell our own story, and to live the vibrancy of each note in our unfolding poetic song.

The Woodland tribe bears Acorns of Oak Knowledge, a token gifted to all tribe members by their fearless leader. They twirl, jump, and wildly chant as they represent the South, and the Vision and Hope of all beings, seen and unseen. They carry the Staff of a Just Peace, and are symbolized by a mighty Bear. They swear an oath to hold in their minds a bright and passionate vision for a glorious future, and a resplendent present, which is the most important moment of our lives. They encourage each of us to ask: “Am I willing maintain my passion in the face of my own shadow, and follow that passion to attain my
highest vision?”

In the center, where the Tribes gather, we hold our ceremony, looking in each direction at the horizon. We ask, “is there a land beyond the horizon, a place beyond the fields
we know?” We hope that each time we hold a ceremony, we will do so with a slightly larger “known world.” Yet we hope also that we will retain our desire to explore, to venture beyond the known. We need only pick a direction.

In the ceremony, our King and Queen will swear an oath to live their lives for a year, in a way that maintains balance in the world. In so doing, they will help maintain balance in
the world of faerie as well. As their oaths grace our ears, giving us all hope for ourselves and the children yet to come, we can all make an individual oath. We invite you to consider an oath along these lines: “I swear to serve my community, offering them the depth of my song and story, striving to create a vision of authentic truth in each life that I touch. I vow to strive for these virtues: the strength of a mountain, the passion of the woodlands, the inspiration of the meadow, and the love and compassion of the river. When I fall down and forget, I will climb up again, and remember to remember who I
am.”
-The Gathering of Tribes Ceremonial Text by Andrew Steed and Stephen Winick
A Message from the Tribal Leaders: Join a Tribe!

Meadow

Come with us and gather in the meadow. Feel the soft grass beneath your feet, sit in the sunshine and be surrounded by the sweet smell of the new flowers. Laugh and play like a child, and giggle as the wind whispers its secrets into your ear. The Meadow tribe is a happy go-lucky bunch. We like to frolic and dream. We are led by Chrissy who, along with her family of fun-loving fae, sings and dances in the May! Before the coronation ceremony, members of the Meadow tribe gather by the brick home, on the edge of the meadow where the Gossamer Stage is located. Look for a banner depicting a Stag. We hope you will join us.
Mountain

From the rugged high lands we come, the Mountain Tribe, bringing the faeries of the air and the Sacred Stone of the North. We are symbolized by the Hawk, who makes his nest
in the rocky heights. We welcome all who live in or love the mountains, all you hikers and environmentalists, all of you with a clear view from on high as the winter sun slants through the tree limbs on a brisk cloudless morning. Okay, so that’s the lofty stuff. We are also fun-loving and freewheeling. Our co-leaders are mother and daughter, Anne and Olivia. Anne (in addition to being a rowdy, card-carrying Appalachian) is a specialist in the care of magical creatures. Olivia is a time traveler who will welcome anyone of any era, or imaginary era, and each and every Time Lord. Join us as we march and chant, bearing dragons and our Stone and our timeless traditions. Let’s rock it on over! Mountain Tribe meets at the top of Frodo’s Hill, fifteen minutes before each midday ceremony, under the banner of the three mountains.
River

How loudly can you scream? Can you jump? Sing? Clap hands? Make silly faces? If so, this might be the tribe for you. We embody the motion and enthusiasm of rushing waters. We love the rush of movement and the joy of dance. Nothing is constant, and neither are the waters of the worlds around us. River Tribe is there when the music touches you deep in your soul and you have to dance, when your breath catches at the sight of the sunset, when you spin around a bonfire, and when you race for the sheer pleasure of the wind upon your face. The squish of mud between your toes, the scent of lilacs on the wind, the laughter you can’t choke back, that is all River Tribe. We meet prior to coronations by the stream across the bridge from Glimmer Court, under the banner of the salmon.
Woodland

With acorns in hand, the Woodland Tribe comes from deep in the forest bring tales of enchantment and merriment to all they encounter. Come join us in the Woodlands and feel the peace and solitude that is found with the trees. The Fairies of the Woodlands can help you get lost or help you get found. Join Ticaleha the Woodland Tribe leader, dig your roots deep, and raise and shake your branches high into the beautiful sky. Be granted your very own acorn from Ticaleha to join the tribe and to discover that you are an acorn that has the wonderful opportunity to grow mighty as the Oak tree. Leaf to leaf we will march to the ceremonies to celebrate the bringing in of the May! The Woodland Tribe gathers in the woods near the habitats, under the Banner of the Bear, fifteen minutes before each midday ceremony.

This path I’m on has taken a long time to manifest and show itself but currently I feel I’m starting to bloom. It’s a curvy path with lots of side roads and detours…

Wow. I played my first show here at Wicked Faire tonight and was accompanied by Ken Om Crampton on drums. It was great fun! This festival is huge and in two hotels! Tomorrow we play two shows; one on the main stage at 3:15pm and one on the lobby stage at 11:30pm;) so stoked. I have friends joining us, Deron Epstein and Jannet Quirk who are a music duo planning to bust out tunes throughout the Faire! We are videoing and hopefully soon I’ll be able to put some of these shows up for you all to see.

Be well, soon it will be spring!

Wicked Faire is in TWO WEEKS!!!
I’m so excited to play music there!
I’ve been rehearsing with my new vocal effects box. It is so cool. It has over 200 different effects you can use on your voice… Everything from mild reverb to sounding like Bari White or an alien reptile… So cool. Of course the key I think is to learn it so well that you can use it subtly… Other news? I did it! I ordered the boots I’ve been drooling and fawning over for months. And they say Aries are hasty! They’re really pretty. Basically, think Mary Poppins. Practically perfect in every way;)
I’ve really been working on my song,“Black Bird” a lot. I’m using some cool vocal effects that go well with the song. I may have a drummer with me at Wicked Faire!
It’s snowy outside and there’s a fire in my hearth.
Good night sweet reader!

Whew! We are currently en route to San Francisco after spending almost two weeks out here on the west coast. Last night I played my new baritone guitar at a house party in Ashland, Oregon with drummer, Michael Saint John. I really enjoyed playing music with him and my baritone! I also played Luna, my black acoustic electric. She is also a delight. So, Bari, my new baritone… We were walking down Haight street the day after we flew in to San Francisco and I had to go to Haight Street Music. I asked one of the guys there about what kind of guitar would play lower than a regular guitar and he said a baritone. He happened to have one and brought the most beautiful one out. The lowest string is a B under the low E on a regular guitar. It’s kind of a bass. You play it through a bass amp and the neck is longer and the frets are farther apart than a regular guitar. I love Bari. He’s heavy. Low and heavy and I love him. He’s a black electric Gretsch with silver sparkles… Love him.
We are almost at the end of our trip out here and we saw so many friends and fellow musicians.
Happy New Year all!

Jessica Startag:www.jessicastar.com,2005:Post/28987582012-12-14T18:16:39-05:002017-01-15T19:53:05-05:00Gig at Barnes and Noble

It was very cute and fun. I played Me and Bobby McGee, a new song that Josh and I wrote called, Too Hot Day and he sang with me on that one a little, and Dragon’s Lair. They were actually really listening by the third song. I think they liked that it was about a dragon!

I personally have a lot to be thankful and grateful for… Let me begin; God.
This human experience. For my husband and son!!!
To be able to play music, hear it, write it down, form it into songs and share it with people( and animals). Our three awesome cats and our swanky pad. For the magical community which I’m finding more and more all over the world. My health and that of all the people and creatures on our planet. Freedom of expression and religion. Evolving minds and developing souls. Sunset. Healthy food, water and air. Yoga. Fire dancing. My journey from the Pacific NW to Northern California, and for the past ten years, in New York. All of my friends who are my family, I LOVE YOU!

I played Friday and Sunday and had a really magical time. I got to spend some time with the amazing SJ Tucker and Betsy Tinney. I just loved hearing them play! Mark Lewis and Billy Scudder were always a joy to see and interact with. Faun was amazing as were The Moon and the Nightspirit.
Emilio, Kelly and Treguenda were spellbinding;)
Adam Hurst is just beyond. Amazing and so haunting is his cello playing.
My husband (and roadie) and I had so much fun and look forward to the next gathering!

Wow. Geez. OMG. Awesome.
What a tight band! I am so happy I went to their show. Totally inspiring. Richie Blackmore is probably one of the best guitarists I’ve ever witnessed. Tuck Andres and Michael Hedges are right there of course. Ah, I’ll give a shout out to Gregg Tilles! Yes, my long time former guitar player.
Candice Knight is very manifest! Very good singer and flute/ pipe player! Also just gorgeous. No wonder she was crowned Queen of the Faeries!
Pretty cool. Their set was like a castle and we were at the tavern. We were really at the Tarrytown Music Hall in NY.
Isn’t life interesting? It’s pretty late for me here; time to go read ElfQuest!

Ok, after my 11th burn(times at Burning Man), I’m experiencing a kind of sad recompression into the Default World. I do love my life but I must say that there is no better city than Black Rock. Whenever we’re ready to be there all year, I’m on board! The climate in Black Rock is not the one I’d choose for the year around living but the energy of the people is. I had so much fun dancing!!! Dancing with everyone! Such good dj’s! And I got to play music with some of my old friends from California!
I guess in my head and heart I’m always more in Black Rock than completely enmeshed in the larger world… What can I say? I miss you, Citizens of BRC!!! Miss you and your beautiful carefree spirits!
And to you gypsys I met; live it! These folks are in the wind and on the road.

Miss you.

Jessica Startag:www.jessicastar.com,2005:Post/28987642012-09-01T15:16:28-04:002014-04-25T12:28:51-04:00Black Rock City 2012

Wow! Burning Man was AWESOME this year! We rented an RV for the first time and it was definitely a good move. You really save a lot of physical energy when you can shut the door and chill in the air conditioning in the heat of the day and sleep in a cozy bed out of the dust. Also there’s the fridge, shower and kitchen!
This was my 11th burn and Ben’s 7th. We were 7-11. Ha ha. I reconnected with some great friends from Sonoma County, Garth Ferris and Ryan Butler. We had a jam session in Garth’s trailer last night around 5am! We danced til the sun came up on Thursday night at some amazing parties. I met people from Israel, Germany, Norway, Georgia, Austin, LA, Colorado, and many more places!
Ben and I spun fire last night!!!
Yes, Burning Man is still my favorite place on the planet for one week a year.

I’ll be playing the Village Stage and attending the masquerade balls;) I love it.
http://faeriecon.com/

My husband and I will be attending Burning Man NEXT WEEK!!! Yes, we are not taking our three year old. He is having a week with Grandma and Grandpa and his Aunties while we celebrate our fifth wedding anniversary and our tenth year of knowing each other. For those of you who don’t know, Ben and I met at Burning Man in 2002.
We went to the NY Renaissance Fair last weekend and I bought a bodhran drum! Now to learn how to play it! It’s coming to BM for sure.
Last week I went for a sleep-over at my friend Kellianna’s house up in MA. http://www.kellianna.com/
Wendy Rule was also there as a touring musician/house guest and we had a great time. http://www.wendyrule.com/
I got to hear Wendy lay down guitar and vocal tracks for Kellianna’s new cd. Magical.
I’ve been back home from FaerieWorlds in Eugene, Oregon for five days now. One week ago today, I was rockin’ the NeverWorlds stage with Michael Saint John on percussion. Sigh… Dost thou know how many years I’ve waited to play music with Michael? Like, since I met him wayyyy back in the late 90’s! He’s awesome.
I turn my focus towards Burning Man and then, Faeriecon! This has been a great summer for my music. I have six, yes, SIX Dragon’s Lair CDs left from the first thousand!!! I did keep five for my archives but I feel pretty proud of myself. Time to reorder!!!
Here is a picture of me taken by my friend, Keith, as I prepare for my debut at FaerieWorlds!

He, his staff and many volunteers created such a truly magical faerie land complete with mermaids in the stream!
I will be playing there again next year with my band.
I got to share the experience with my husband and three year old son! They sword fought, blew bubbles with giant wands and enjoyed some of mama’s music;)

I went to sleep at 5am!!! Whew! It usually takes me a while to unwind. I ate BBQ from the Dinosaur and watched funny shows. I did take a video of the show so hopefully I’ll be able to add it to the video section of my website.

Tonight was awesome. I sang with Jason Rosen on lead guitar and vocals, Antar Goodwin on bass, and Tomo on drums. What great musicians! They’re a very tight band because they play together all the time. It was really fun singing to their grooves. We played from about 11pm to 2am. I love the night life. We just went to Faeriecon in Baltimore, Maryland. I had so much fun. Seriously. Geez! What is it? A gathering of Faerie culture, art, music, clothing, pointed ears, dancing… Wow. I felt right at home.
As some of you know, I’ve been trying, for years to figure out what path to take as far as the direction of my music. A few years ago, I felt that I’m Country. I do love new Country music. It’s part of who I am. I’m a multifaceted being. I have been focused on writing and recording Country and love the new music I’ve made. But part of what’s been concerning me is that alot of the music I’ve made and that’s on my albums is more ethereal. I’ve felt sad that in choosing to focus on Country, I wouldn’t be able to play songs that I’ve written and love that are more Faery Rock.
This weekend has helped me figure some stuff out. I asked my son, two and a half, should I play Faery music or Country? He said,“both!”
So, happily I will tread the Faerie path.. My song,“Traveling Minstress” actually came to me from the Faery beings around or in a plum tree. It’s one of my very favorite songs.
The joke is that I’m sure it’s obvious to those who know me. So, there you go!

He’s two. We were at the Jersey mall getting sunglasses and they were promoting the show with a karaoke booth. My son walked right up, grabbed a flier and came over with daddy and said,“Mama” and handed it to me.
I spent the week preparing. Figuring out material and practicing.
All of that while being a mom to a two year old; thank you family for helping out so much this week so that I could go follow my dreams!
I woke up at 3 am on Wednesday morning, the day of registration and 4 am on Thursday, the day of the audition.
The actual audition was all of about 45 seconds. I sang my original song,” What she is”. I figured that showing them exactly who I am is the way to go. Otis Redding said “just do you”.
I wore my rock and roll finery and had freshly gotten my hair done copper red. The man listened and then he said, “That’s gonna be a no for today.”
I have mixed emotions about not getting at least into the first round. This is what I do, I’m a singer. They’re looking for something that they did not see in me. Someone said to me recently that I was probably better off for not getting a different audition a while back when I auditioned to be the new lead singer of INXS. I think of these moves as the chance card in Monopoly.
Ah well, two days of my life spent in Newark, NJ. I met some really cool people in line the day of the audition. There was alot of camaraderie. To me it was like a musical circus! You should have seen the many women in their mini skirts and platform heels. I saw no less than two fully picked out Afros on beautiful women.
I hung out with Daniel from Bachelor Party. Super cool. If you read this Daniel, NICE STAR SHIRT!!! And these two thirteen year olds and one of their dads. They were so fun to wait with. Any of you get a golden ticket? Did you drink out of the chocolate fountain?
Well, I did have a great time all in all. And Tiger. Punk rock singer hooper. I enjoyed talking with you at 7:30 am. Did we get on the news?!?!
Back to plan A,

So, I’ve been interested lately in Suzi Quatro and Joan Jett. Inspiring women of Rock.

Mmm, yep it’s a full moon out there tonight! So, I’ve been going through old papers from 2005 and all the napkins with partial song ideas, business cards of various musicians and people I’ve met since I’ve lived in NYC and even came across all of my mementoes from our trip to Amsterdam! So I’ve been reflecting on my path and where I am now and all the decisions that led me here. Pretty cool. I also keep journals which I find very helpful. Nice to look back and see what and who was important to you at different times. Like cards of people that at the time I had big hopes for working with only to realize we didn’t click or other people that casually gave me their email addresses and they became really good friends and still are. Right now I’m hanging with my cat who I found about five months after moving here after a recording session in Harlem… At the time I knew I couldn’t just leave her there so not knowing if I could keep her or not, she came home in a box, on the bus. Eight years later she’s still this magical and amazing being who loves it when I sing and play guitar.
Ah, you guessed it; it’s my midnight ramble. Just keeping in touch from the Big Apple!

I had another slide guitar class at the Jalopy Theater last Saturday with Ernie Vega. He’s a good teacher. We’re learning a song called, “Keep your lamp trimmed and burning”. It’s in open D tuning which is from the low string to the high: D A D F# A D.
I’m excited to listen to the original version of the song. It’s a dark sounding gospel kind of song.
I got my pictures that my photographer friend, Darin Chumbley took at my last Dinosaur BBQ show! The photo at the top of the blog is one of many that he took. What a transformation to have a baby and then somewhat return to your original state. OK, so I may never be at my original state again but hey, I made a really cute little guy!
I’ve been going to ballet class at the Mark Morris Dance Group here in Brooklyn and really loving getting back into dance. I think my next venture will be either modern or contemporary jazz. Dancing used to be my whole life until I was 22 and turned it all into music. Hmm, maybe I’ll bring acting back in? It’s just fun! There are so many things you can do here in NYC.
Very cool and fun class. Y'all know I used to be a very serious ballet/modern/jazz student?
I danced very intensely from age 14 to 23. That was in Portland, Oregon. Then I moved to Northern California and just switched over to music full time. So now, 18 years later, I'm dusting off my ballet! I'm also taking finger style guitar picking and slide guitar classes at the Jalopy Theater and School of Music. I never wanted to go to college after High School but now I'm in the University of Jessica Star right here in NYC! Adult education rocks.

I'm still living in Brooklyn with my husband, baby boy, three cats, two banjos and four guitars. I've been taking a slide guitar class at the Jalopy Theater and School of Music with Ernest Vega. He is a really great guitarist! We're learning different open tunings.
I try to just write about musical stuff here on my site but I've been experiencing a whole new dimension being a mom! Talk about challenging... It's a steep learning curve. Definitely makes you put your priorities in place. I feel like I'm becoming a butterfly but right now I'm in the metamorphosis stage. Alot of songwriters refer to their songs as children. Well, Joshua actually is a child and he is by far the best creation I've made. I think he'll be a better musician than me too! If he wants to be.
I've been taking drives upstate and it's so green and beautiful. I crave clean air and wilderness. I'm from the woods basically and I've been living in NYC for almost exactly eight years! EIGHT YEARS!!!! I thought I'd be here for two! Ha! At two years being here I had just barely begun to understand this place. Someone told me that NY will show you what you're not. It really does.
People ask me all the time what kind of music I play and write so the question has been one I ask myself frequently in attempts to give my elevator speech," folk-rock", "country-rock" ... And then people say to me, " you're a hippy. Everyone knows you're an Earth Mama".. So, maybe I play hippy rock. Now I'm smiling:) hippy rock!!!! HIPPY ROCK!!!!
I write as my family sleeps amid the constant noise that is NYC...
Good night to you,

Exciting
news!!!
I went in to the studio to record my new song,” Boxes of tears” with my
producer this past Monday! We tracked his acoustic guitar and my lead
vocals.Today we’re going to record drums, bass, electric and steel
guitar, piano and Hammond B3! The musicians on the session are some of
the top studio musicians in Nashville.
Here’s who I have playing and who they play with… Very exciting!

Drums - Vinnie Santoro - Johnny Cash, Shania Twain

Bass - Dave Francis - Pam Tillis, Trisha Yearwood

Electric Guitar/Pedal Steel - Russ Pahl - Vince Gill, Willie
Nelson

Keyboards - Catherine Marx - Reba, Kelly Clarkson

Fiddle/Mandolin - Andy Leftwich - Ricky Skaggs

I love my life.

So, my album is coming along and it’s going to
be
beautiful. Like I’ve probably written already, it’s the first album I’ve
planned out before hand. The others were recorded with the songs I had
ready at the time, with many different styles. This one is all Country. We just saw Willie Nelson in concert and the pedal steel
guitar player was amazing and he’s now going to be on my song…
Blessed. I feel very fortunate.
I can’t wait to share my music with the world!!!!

Holy socks Batman! It’s been a while since I wrote! Sorry!!!

Okay, I have the best excuse in the world; I’m raising my

So, Grandma and Grandpa are here with him and I have some

Hi! Music, music, music. Country music and Country music in
NYC!

Apparently there are some people in Sonoma County, where I
used to live and perform, that thought I was still out there and I guess just
hadn’t been playing out for a while. Funny. I’ve been here in NYC for almost
eight years! That’s a long time not to see someone. Thanks for thinking of me
you folks who have gotten in touch recently to ask when I’m playing next in
Northern California. That’s a nice feeling.

I’m reading
the best book. It’s called “Finding her voice” an illustrated history of women
in Country music. Such a good read. I love learning the history of things I’m
interested in. This book starts in the Appalachian Mountains with women teaching
their daughters and granddaughters songs that came over with their mothers from
Europe and goes all the way to almost the present time. So many female artists,
who spent their lives and energy making their brand of Country music, most are
names most people have never heard of.
Does it make their missions any less valid that they weren’t rich or
famous? Some of them were very rich and famous but it was so long ago that no
one knows of them now. I met a girl in her 20’s who didn’t even know who Chrissie
Hynde is (The Pretenders).

So, learning
that NYC once had a very thriving Country music scene is very interesting to
me. Nashville wasn’t always the epicenter of Country music! I’m learning about
all these folk rock singer/songwriters who came out of California that went on
to be Country musicians! That’s like me! So cool. I mean, cool to be a pioneer
for sure but also nice to know there were others that came before you doing
pretty much what you do, just forty years earlier.

I just had my
first guitar lesson this week with a new teacher. I’m learning music theory.
Wow. My teachers name is Hiro and he plays jazz guitar. We both agree that Led
Zeppelin is the best Rock band ever.

Alright, as
much as I’d like to go on, I need to play some music. I’ll just try to write
more often.

Hey y’all!

Greetings from Brooklyn, NY where Country music does indeed live!

I’m still writing new songs for my upcoming Country cd and I’m well on my way. I’ve got about 14 so far and my goal is to have about 20 and then choose the strongest 12 songs for album. I’ve never written a whole album before and it’s a really fun process. My past three albums have been compilations of songs that I already had finished that we recorded and put out as an album. The thing about that way of doing it is, at least for me, you get a variety of genres. This way of writing is more focused and I think it’s going to end with a very cohesive Country cd.

My show last Friday at the Dinosaur BBQ in Harlem was very fun. I sang with Jason Rosen’s band for a good three hours and then went home and enjoyed delicious barbeque at 3am.

Hey world!

I had my baby! His name is Joshua Star Sanders and he was born on Wednesday, February 25th, 2009 at 12:04 pm in Greenwich Village, NYC at St. Vincent’s hospital via cesarean. Little dude was breech and we did EVERYTHING to try coercing him in to turning but no, he had his own plans.

We were planning on a home birth but when you have a breech situation that’s not really a great way to go. So, I had to suck it up and go do the thing I feared most about this pregnancy, getting cut open and having the baby just taken out. I was actually looking forward to the rite of passage that comes with the natural birth process. I’d read up on it for 8 months and really done my homework, only to have a spinal block in the operating room and be totally numb from the torso down when he was brought in to the world. Ah, well. Everyone kept saying,” You’ll forget about the actual birth when you have that beautiful little baby in your arms.” I heard that so many times that it actually started to annoy me. I wanted the experience of giving birth and after seeing Ricki Lake’s movie,” The business of being born” I really wanted a homebirth.

Before I went in for the cesarean, I felt like I’d gone through my fears and disappointments about the change in our birthing plans. My husband Ben was with me the whole time and he wore my majorly mojo-filled birthing necklace that I planned on wearing, as they don’t let you wear any jewelry during surgery. The necklace is a long and heavy piece containing 23 different friends beads, trinkets and charms that they’d given to me for the necklace, sending their support for a safe passage. Well, all the mojo worked! It was a weird experience having a cesarean, but honestly all the staff members at St. Vincent’s were really cool and very personable. I felt I could connect with all of them which made a weird, sterile situation much more tolerable.

We stayed in a private room in the hospital for three days so that Ben could be with me the whole time. All of the nurses were really helpful with teaching me how to breast-feed. Our room was on the ninth floor overlooking Manhattan, the Hudson River, and Jersey. The three days I spent in the hospital were pretty painful with the stitches and staples in my lower abdomen but I was on a pretty high dose of Motrin that whole time. One part that sucked was that both Ben and I had the flu at the time, and with it an awful cough. Every time I coughed it hurt a lot! Luckily there’s cough syrup that’s safe for breast-feeding so, at two in the morning after we were home for a day, Ben went out and got it for us.

By Saturday we got to go home but there was a possibility that they wanted to keep Joshua for a few days because he had a high Bilirubin count, indicating jaundice. We had to take him back to the lab and the pediatrician the following Monday and Wednesday to have that checked and you can imagine how much fun it was traveling with a newborn after having a cesarean. Thankfully, his count went down by the second appointment to the pediatrician. It was so good to be back home. I was so grateful for our nice home and a quiet environment.

At the time of this writing, Joshua is seven and a half weeks old! Time is really flying by. I can now go back to yoga, which I did yesterday for the first time (you’re supposed to heal for six weeks first).

After hearing stories from women who had their babies around the same time as me, I don’t think having a cesarean was really all that bad. Sure, it’s not what I would have chosen but there are positives like, I never went in to labor, I didn’t go through labor, I’m not stretched out down there at all, I’ve actually healed up rather quickly, and Joshua’s head was never cone shaped- he has a cute, round head.

Now, I do know there are aspects of a natural birth that I wish he and I would have gotten to experience; the first being him going through the birth canal. There is the stretching and squeezing of the baby that awakens their nervous system and lengthens their bodies that we didn’t get to do. Also, there are hormones that are released in the mother during the delivery that make her naturally protective of her baby. I’m super protective so, that happened even without the natural delivery.

So, in conclusion, I’m very grateful that we’re at a point in time where cesarean is a safe option if you need to do it that way. We are both healthy and that is what’s important, just like everyone said. I don’t feel cheated out of my birth experience because I feel like this WAS my birth experience. For whatever reason, the universe had it’s own agenda.

We just got home from nine days in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico! What’s there? Friends and natural hot springs! We soaked at least two to three times a day, every day and ate a lot of Mexican food. It’s such a trippy place. We were there for New Year’s and went to a party at an Italian restaurant in the town. I’m very happy to be home even if it is to come back to the city of cold, wet weather.

If you’ve been reading my blog, then you know I’m very pregnant. I’m in my eighth month and I’m pretty huge. More rotund every day. It’s cool, I’m digging it. One of the things we noticed once we left NYC for our travels is that people say things to pregnant women that they really shouldn’t. It’s like they think that just because you’re pregnant, it gives them license to stop editing their mouths and just say whatever they want and the pregnant woman is supposed to just take it. Lucky for them I did hold my tongue. I have a pretty sharp comeback unless I’m trying to be good. Also, when you’re pregnant, you’re way more emotional and hormonal so it’s kind of ironic that that’s when people start saying whatever they want to about your size, looks, etc. If you’re reading this and you know someone or interact with someone who is pregnant, the only real good thing to say is something along the lines of,” you are absolutely radiant!” Get my drift? We don’t need to be reminded of how huge we are. We also don’t need the unprofessional opinion about how we look like we’re going to “pop one out any day”. Geez! Learn some manners! It’s alright, I wrote a song about it. More fuel for the fire!

Well, we got our 20 week sonogram yesterday in NYC and the baby is a boy! Looks very healthy, smart, funny and cute. Oh, it also looks very talented. It is so mind bending to watch a little person moving around in your belly! I mean, I’m aware of it and I know it’s happening inside me but when you actually see it on a monitor with those 3-D shots where you can really see it’s (his) features… Absolutely wild. The funny thing is, it’s the most normal thing in the world and that’s how every one of us got here! I watch so much sci-fi that sometimes when I think about birth and how women are the only way people are born onto this planet, it seems almost old fashioned. Like the test tube way of doing it and science taking over is the more “posh” way to create babies but, at this point and hopefully forever actually, babies are born through women. Nothing else can recreate the loving environment that a real mommy provides.

I’m hoping to glean some songwriting inspiration today from our sonogram experience yesterday. Oh, the baby was moving around the entire time we were watching it! A Very active New Yorker!

Wow! Just came home from the Red Lion show… Nice one. The band, “Last Tribe NYC” was SMOKIN’!!! We ripped it up for 3 hours on a Monday night. That crowd down there on Bleeker Street really knows how to have a good time!

My belly is growing and growing! I just saw the pictures from tonight’s show. It’s amazing how much your body can change in so short a time. I really am having a blast being pregnant. I was the girl who didn’t know if I ever wanted to have kids; it didn’t look all that appetizing as I looked around at people who were doing it but, I read somewhere lately that it’s God’s secret really that you never know how amazing the journey is until you’re on it. I believe that. We’re just beginning the journey and it’s amazing.

I think this was Nugget’s fifth gig so far. Yes, Nugget is what we call the little one inside. Of course, we’ll name it something more appropriate once it’s born!

Okay, it’s 4:14am and I am officially TIRED!

The Honky Tonk Angels show was FUN! I played solo for a half hour and had a great time doing it. I debuted two new songs: Boxes of Tears and Wild Rose. Yep, hopefully soon I’ll be able to add the video from these shows I’ve been doing onto my website and myspace!

And for all of you who haven’t heard yet…

I’m pregnant! As of now, I’m 17 weeks! Pretty cool. I’ve had three shows so far as a pregnant lady; one in Greenwich Village, one in Harlem, and one in the East Village. Thank God they make stylish maternity clothes! It’s relieving to me to be able to get really cute clothes as I grow bigger and bigger.

I guess our baby is going to be a New Yorker! I have no desire to live anywhere else. I love it here. I feel like I’ve thrived as a person and as an artist in this crazy environment. I’m spoiled now too. Where as I used to shop at flea markets and garage sales, now I never find anything I actually want to have in my possession at those places; nothing used really. I have a theory about the clothes that you get used here in NYC compared to the ones on the west coast; I think the ones here are just more used and stinky. More likely my taste has just changed. Although, because there are so many stylish people here, every once in a while I’ll happen upon a stoop sale with ladies my size and find designer stuff like Betsey Johnson dresses, and they’re cheap! Those I pick up.

I’m so happy to be home after so much traveling in late August and mid September.

We went to Burning Man, our annual pilgrimage, and as you can guess, I was super tired this year! I never even made it out on the playa at night to check out the art and the parties. Ah well, I was having my own inner party. I pretty much just hung out at camp, ate and slept. It was a hotttt year too. We left two days earlier than planned and thank God for that. There was a nine-hour dust storm on Saturday that pushed the burn back til like, 2am or so. We left on Friday. I’m so grateful for my intuition. We were in my favorite spot, Mt. Shasta, before and after Burning Man and that was awesome. It was our one-year anniversary of being married so we went up to the spot on the mountain where we had our ceremony. What a special place.

We flew home for one week of sleeping (for me) and then flew out to Seattle for my best friends’ wedding near Port Townsend, WA. It was a beautiful wedding on the beach. We flew home and it all added up.. All the traveling, all the socializing, I was so pooped! The Dixie Chicks said something about never plan a tour when you’re pregnant and I can totally see why. Just the plane flights are exhausting!

I’m all better now and just very happy to be home without any big travel plans in the too near future. I just wanted to write a little more than I have been, let you in on a little bit of my life here in this wild city. I wish you, the reader, all the best and hope you’re enjoying your time on this fair planet.

Last night I sang with Jason Rosen’s band at the Dinosaur Barbque up in Harlem. It was a lot of fun! We played for about 3 hours I think and ate some delicious food. We got video of the show, some of it good, some of it not so good depending on where my husband was standing with the camera due to the other audience members moving around and in front of it. I must say, I looked a bit like a lady pirate last night, all in black. The idea is to put some of the video up on my website and on myspace. This of course takes editing and converting and time so we’ll see if it happens and how soon.

We’re in town til next Wednesday when we fly off to Seattle for my best friends’ wedding on a beautiful island near Port Townsend, WA. They’re getting married on the beach! I still need cute shoes but the need for shoes always translates to me as the opportunity to acquire new cowgirl boots. Okay, maybe a beach wedding isn’t exactly perfect for boots but I think I can make it work. The tricky part is finding cute boots here in NYC that are REAL cowgirl boots, not just the style, but the real thing. The last good ones I got were in El Paso, Texas.

We’ve been home from the west coast for almost five days now. It’s kind of funny to be home for only a week and then fly off across the country again! It’s preparing me for touring!

Hey! Whoo! We just got back from our ten-day trip out to Northern California and Black Rock City, Nevada! It was our one-year anniversary of being married and since we got married right on Mt. Shasta, we went back and celebrated there. We also visited my good friends who live nearby and swam in the most beautiful Castle Lake.

Our Burning Man trip this year was the shortest one ever! We were there all of two days! We got there Wednesday and left Friday. My brother came with us and it was his very first burn. We went back to Mt. Shasta for four more days after Burning Man and mostly slept and relaxed before coming back to our lives in NYC. Now we’re back to work and it’s soon going to be FALL!!! I play at the Dinosaur Barbque tonight, Sept.6th, with Jason Rosen’s band and then at the end of the month, Saturday, Sept.27th I’m playing solo at Banjo Jim’s for the “Honky Tonk Angels” show!

Good evening! I just got home from the jam at Kenny’s Castaways with Jason Rosen. I walked in- he called me on to the stage! I must remember to apply my lipstick BEFORE I walk in the club. So, I sang the first set with no lipstick, whatever. The microphone usually covers my lips anyway.

Tonight was fun and there were a lot of people down there. I went for a walk with some musicians and found a slice of pepperoni pizza… Why is pepperoni so darn good? It just is.

It’s late- 3am. I must go to bed now!

My website is getting some lovely reconstruction! There is music on my site now! Soon we’ll be adding video! I’m very excited about this.

Live performing has been great. I sang up in Harlem at the Dinosaur Barbque with Mo’Soul, which is Jason Rosen’s band. The audience was very supportive and they dug the music. The food there was delicious. The Tuesday night jams at Kenny’s Castaways are always fun. It’s a very cool venue and looks like the inside of a pirate ship. I’ve been learning new cover songs and it’s a good place to debut them.

I’m writing new songs for my forthcoming album (get it; 4th coming, it’s my 4th album!)

Tonight was a great time at Kenny’s Castaways. I have seven new songs that I’m singing with the band; Damn your eyes and Shakey Ground (Etta James), Groove me (King Floyd), Super Duper Love and Some kind of wonderful (Joss Stone), I want to take you higher (Ike and Tina Turner), and Do right man (Aretha Franklin). We played all of them tonight in preparation for our gig this Friday at the Dinosaur Barbque in Harlem. I have a feeling that show is going to be very fun.

We went to Atlantic City this weekend and saw John Rich and Cowboy Troy ROCK Bally’s!!! The audience was mainly people who were gambling and then went to see the live show but there were some true fans in the house!!! MEEEE!!! I got the crowd up and rushing the stage! I mean, I know it was really the band but no one was dancing except yours truly and then two other righteous ladies joined me and then we danced to the front of the stage… On the third time we did this, all these people joined in! It was awesome. Two Foot Fred was getting down! They had a really good female duo with them called Jane Deere.

We walked the boardwalk and eventually settled on diner food at Johnny Rockets. The next day after sleeping in pretty late, we ate at a posh spot on the boardwalk in the Trump hotel and then went down to the beach and were giddy as our feet sunk deeper into the sand, lapping wave by lapping wave.

I just got home from the Tuesday night jam with Jason Rosen now happening at Kenny’s Castaways. What a cool venue! Have you ever heard musicians refer to themselves as “pirates” or “pirate types”? Well, Kenny’s Castaway’s is like the inside of a big ship! The jam was fun and the regular crew of jammers were there. I went and got myself some chicken kabob afterwards and hopped in a cab to come home to beautiful Brooklyn.

I am still working on writing my new cd! Geez, it takes time sometimes. I’m working on writing these very cool Country songs that have a lot of soul and directly reflect my own experiences. It is fun. This will be the first cd that I’ve done that was made as a complete album- starting from the songwriting. The others were compilations of songs I had written over the years. There might be a few old songs (old only to me since you haven’t heard them) that I put on the cd but mostly it will be brand new creations.

That’s right!

I’m doing my troubadour bit at the Red Lion this coming Tuesday night. It’s the “come to my show when you get out of work” slot… A great way to spend a Tuesday evening in spring…

What else? I’ve been singing with the rockin’ Jason Rosen every Tuesday night LATE at the Baggot Inn for his official jam and it has been a blast.

The last Tuesday we’ll do there is going to be May 20th. After that we’re moving over to Kenny’s Castaways in the same neighborhood.

After my gig on Tuesday, May 6th, most likely I’ll be singing at the Baggot with Jason and crew.

For you gardeners: Our Brooklyn garden is majorly sweet this year already.

There is tranquility in the city.

Tonight I sang at the Red Lion on Bleeker Street in Greenwich Village.

I sang with Last Tribe which is Jason Rosen, Antar (bass), Tomo (drums), Sing (lead rippin’ guitar) and Darin (awesome lead guitar). We also had a three piece horn section!

The gig was from 1-4am! Once again; YEEHAW. I love late nights.

It’s 4:41am as I write. I only stayed at the gig til 3am. It was my first time singing with those guys at that particular gig. It’s pretty much the same musicians as at the Baggot Inn jam on Tuesdays. I give a big shout out to MAC make-up! That stuff stays on and looks pretty much the same as when you put it on, hours afterwards and even after my gigs. Their lipstick really rocks.

I could blab on about all sorts of related and unrelated subjects but instead, I’m going to say goodnight!

Tonight was really fun! I sang at the Baggot Inn again with Jason Rosen and his jam. My cool friend Kristen from yoga came with a friend of hers and that always makes for a good audience (to have buddies in the house). It is 4:38am right now! Um……..

I LOVE LATE NIGHTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’M A NIGHT OWWWWWLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!

So, with that said; I sang a bunch of leads on songs and sang a bunch of harmonies and learned some songs while on stage. That is always fun; flying naked, flying naked.

Ah, I wore my new red Frye boots: ) They are so pretty. Kind of biker-cowgirl.

I sang at the Baggot Inn last Tuesday, March 4th with Jason Rosen and his jam. What fun! He’s asked me to be in a band with him and his guys so I’ll be singing every Tuesday with them at the Baggot Inn until it apparently closes. Yep, word has it that it is another NYC club that will be shutting down. Wha! Expensive rent!

We had a great time on Tuesday. I sang lead on about 10 songs and harmony on a bunch of others. Bassist, Kentucky Parkis and Drummer, Dave Dawson were there and playing. Also Karel, the jazzy sax player was there and we all shared the stage and made some wild sounds!

It’s a good work out for me and I really do enjoy it. It IS a jam so if you’re a musician, come down and bring your instrument!

Rock on, rock on, rock on,

I sang last night at The Baggott Inn with Jason Rosen and a whole host of talented musicians! Tuesday night jam in NYC’s Greenwich Village, not bad. It was fun. More of a funky R&B feel to the Country I’ve been playing. I sang, “Baby, I love you” and “To love somebody”. It’s always a little like flying naked when you get up on the stage with no rehearsal and hope for the best! They’re all pros though so it was great.

I just got home from the “Evolver: Wake up and dream” party at Jivamukti Yoga School near Union Square in Manhattan. I’m so happy. What a great crowd! There were a bunch of Burning Man people there and also yoga practitioners. Nice people to play for. This year so far has been really full on! I’ve recorded the first song on my new album with heavy-weight Nashville musicians and played two really great shows. I’m grateful! Keep it coming! The combination of yoga, a clean diet, and right motivation is really working for me as far as getting my music out to more people and really moving forward. Yeah. I also did a photo shoot with my photographer friend, Darin Chumbley in Central Park last week. It was drizzly and cold but we got some good shots. Alright, that’s all for now. Be well and check in soon!

WHAT FUN!!!!!!!!! Seriously. Yesterday I went into the studio of my producer, Cliff Goldmacher http://www.cliffgoldmacher.com and we laid down two tracks of him playing sweet acoustic guitar and then we recorded my vocals for my newest song, “What she is”.
My song is a true story that I wrote from the perspective, my perspective, of living in the city and being from the country. It’s a wild paradox. I’m sure it’s a common reality and I like to try and write from new perspectives, at least new for me. When I think about where I’m from, the first vision that comes to mind are the hills right up from the ocean in Bodega Bay, California. The forests and fields up the coast from there where moss grows on ancient trees along with fungus and you can walk by yourself down trails and see no one the whole day. It was there that I dreamed up living here in NYC. I was very happy living in nature but I felt that my real work was here in NYC or at least, this is where it would launch. “What she is” is this story!
So there you go, that’s the story of my newest song. We’re still in the midst of recording it and hopefully soon I’ll have it up for all to hear!

Just a little update for ya!
I’ve been meeting with potential producers for my upcoming album and I can feel the wheels starting to roll. Actually, they’ve been rolling, they’re now speeding up and shifting gears. It’s all feeling very good. I got some new pictures in my studio; one of Bob Marley (not smoking) and one of Jimi Hendrix! My studio is getting better and better. I’ve been writing songs all for my new album.

We celebrated Chanukah this weekend and I made out like a bandit! I got hard shell cases for my banjo (yes, my banjo!) and my Luna guitar and a nice chair for my desk in my studio! Also, the pics of Bob and Jimi were gifts. We have a Christmas tree up in the living room in a nice spot where the passersby can see the lights. I think it spices up the neighborhood here in Brooklyn! I always appreciate when people decorate or plant flowers here. It shows spirit! Alright, that’s it for now, just a little update to say hi and my life is rockin’ here in NYC.

I hope you are all enjoying the holidays!

Last night I went to the weekly Monday night Cutting Room jam! Richie Cannata http://www.richiecannata.com runs it and the band is smokin’ hot.
I sang,” Natural Woman” and it felt great. It started at 11pm or so and I left at 2:30am.
I LOVE LATE NIGHT MUSIC SESSIONS!!!
I’ve always been a night owl and it feels great to be out with the other late night music folks. I met a bunch of cool and talented people and listened to some sweet rocking music.

It’s amazing to me how fast the universe responds when you make up your mind to forge ahead with your plans or make a change in your life that needs to be made. Try it, it’s cool! See what happens as a result of a new choice you’ve made!

We played the NYC Burning Man Decom at the Queens Museum of Art last Saturday night. What a great space for that party. Our set went off without a hitch. It was the first time Kentucky and I have played together live for an audience. It was cool. We played to pre-recorded tracks with drums and fiddle on them. It was the debut of “What she is”, my new dance tempo urban country song! Burners are a delightful crowd to play to. Thank you Decom volunteers for giving us a slot at that great party!

We played at 8pm so, we had the rest of the night for frolicking and partying. There is a huge replica of the five boroughs of NYC there at the museum. I mean, it’s a model of the layout of the boroughs and it’s really cool. There was a lot of great art and slide shows, dancing, pulled chicken tortilla wraps, domes with chill spaces and blinky lights and costumed stranglings.

It was cold enough to wear our fake furs!

Now I’m back to writing new tunes for my next cd. Have I mentioned that I’ve never made an album this way? In the past I put together the best of what I had and called it an album. This time I’ve decided what the flavor of the album will be and am writing and producing the songs to all go on that album. I know most artists probably do it that way but it’s a first to me! It’s all changed since I’ve gotten this digital equipment! I was listening to my older analog recordings compared to strictly digital and I can really see how analog has a smoother, lush and filled out feel. I think I’ll record everything analog and then convert to digital for the engineering and post production… Big words!

Ok, here’s the sermon:

A lot of times when you’re going after your dream, life can be frustrating. Meaning, the feeling of frustration is common. Don’t let it drag you into doubt. You gotta believe!!!

Believe in the reality that your dreams WANT to come true!!! Good dreams, I mean.

Yep, hey if wayyyy more people were bringing into this world the bright dreams that only they can see in their minds, think how much more fun this place would be?! That’s kind of like Burning Man. Everyone is an artist if they want to be at Burning Man. Humans being creative. Creativity makes us happier and might even make us want to share! Yep, I grew up in the post 60’s Bay Area of San Francisco and those hippies had a good effect on me!

Love ya,

Hey y’all!

Yesterday, October 16th was my 5 year anniversary of living in my new hometown, NYC! It’s also my hubby and my 5 year anniversary of living together cause I moved right in with him when I got here (and I never left!).

I love making music! I’m getting very excited about releasing my new album and touring my new songs. I have reworked a few tunes from the past because I want to record them for this album with a full band. Those songs would be “The ocean” and “Firewalk”. I’ve listened to the feedback from audiences and watched the body language as we’re playing them live and I think I’ve fine-tuned them so they’re even better. I’m really excited for the actual recording dates in the studio when we bang out the album the way New York City musicians can. This album will have sexy fiddles, drums, bass, acoustic and electric and steel guitars, back up singers, banjo, and possibly some tabla drums.

I’m still writing songs intended for this album and now I’ve recorded 13! I feel so proud! I really want to get about 24 and then pick the very best for actual release.

I’ve been in pre-production for a while now, which is really a new process for me. It’s something I’ve imagined for years; having a digital studio where you can see all the tracks on your monitor and actually arrange the music more like a picture.
If you haven’t seen the movie,” The Secret”, see it! It’s how I live my life and have lived it for a long time. Well, it’s really how we all live our lives but when your conscious of it, it’s way more fun. Manifesting your dreams!
I LOVE New York City; I dreamed about living here since I was 14 years old. That’s the thing about manifesting your dreams, sometimes they happen quickly and other times they take a very long time. It seems they speed up when you’re focused on them and passionate about them!
Now that Ben and I are married, I have only my music to focus on and believe me, I feel incredibly blessed! I’m so grateful for my sweet life! You, the reader, I wish for you to find whatever it is in yourself that makes you tick the right way so you feel your happiest and most fulfilled in your everyday experience.
